Professional Development for Young Scientists (ProDyS LS2)
A two-day workshop on Leadership and Management Skills for postdocs in the life sciences
28-29 September 2019, Hotel Freienhof, Thun

Course description

We strongly believe in the necessity to integrate interpersonal and self-management skills into the professional repertoire of scientists. The scientific process itself can strongly improve by considering the human components of doing science. Those are essential skills for today's challenges in scientific work and they can be acquired and developed. These aspects are traditionally not taught in academic training and we aim at filling this gap.

- Improve their communication, collaboration and leadership skills
- Understand how to reach career goals more efficiently (doing things right) and more effectively (doing the right thing)
- Improve their (self-)organisational skills
- Learn and practice useful tools for their career in science
- Be encouraged to establish and maintain a peer support group
- Strengthen their professional network

Topics:
- Key communication skills
- Dealing with conflicts constructively
- Organizing your work: setting goals and priorities
- Dealing with different personalities
- Working in teams
- Establishing and maintaining collaborations
- Effective delegation
- Mastering the jon interview process
- Designing a competence portfolio of transferable skills for future career

What is unique about this workshop?

The highly interactive and applied training is focused on day-to-day challenges postdocs encounter, thus going beyond the teaching of abstract concepts. Within the frame of the training, participants will work interactively towards applicable solutions of their real-life challenges and cases.
In its 15-year track record, this course has been well received by organisers and participants at various research institutions across USA, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Japan.
