Prof. David T. Jones

David Jones is Professor of Bioinformatics and Head of the Bioinformatics Group in the Department of Computer Science at the University College London. He is also Director of the Bloomsbury Centre for Bioinformatics, which is a joint Research Centre between UCL and Birkbeck College and which provides bioinformatics training and support services to biomedical researchers. His appointment is held jointly with the Department of Structural and Molecular Biology.

Professor Jones has repeatedly made seminal contributions to protein sequence, structure, evolution, and function analysis. He has developed several widely-used bioinformatics tools such as PSIPRED, GenTHREADER, MEMSAT and DISOPRED. He and his collaborators contributed the top-performing method in community assessment, such as CASP (structure prediction) and CAFA (function prediction). In particular, he was recently part of the AlphaFold project, which resulted in a quantum leap in precision accuracy at CASP13. He was the recipient of countless research grants, including an ERC Advanced Grant in 2015.
